Rowing boats (also known as 'shells'), are named according to how many rowers they carry and whether the rowers have one or two oars each. 'singles', or 'single sculls' have one rower with two small oars (sculls).. As the title of this post suggests, every boat needs a name. following along from my trusty inflatable kayak which is named ‘the divorce machine’ (given by kiwi buddy blair spendelow), there were rumors and suggestions abounding that the rowing boat would be suitably named ‘the divorce machine 2’.. Each seat in the boat is numbered according to its position going from bow to stern. in an eight the seats would be 1 to 8 & cox. two seats, however, are more commonly given a different name. the #1 seat, that closest to the bow, is called "bow seat". the rowing seat closest to the stern is called "stroke"..
